Unique
Somersault is a one of a kind movie. Not the usual romance, tragedy, and drama. The romance is different and weird, the tragedy is painful and numbing. Drama exists without emphasis. Collectively, these make Somersault a unique movie.Romance: Even though Joe(kinda like the hero in the movie), likes being with Heidi(Abbie), he doesn't wanna categorize his definition of "like". This leads to some harsh words and separation. All this seems like the usual stuff. However the way in which both Joe and Heidi react to this makes for the uniqueness. What with Joe kissing a guy just to see if he likes it and Heidi going to the extent of drugs and sleeping with complete strangers to avoid loneliness. Its weirdly simple human tendency.
Tragedy: The hopeless hopefulness of pain has been brought out in this movie. Whether she was thrown out onto the streets or she left willingly, the separation from her mother is devastating for Heidi. As time goes by, she experiences blow after blow and that numbs her. Yet she's willing to try again. That spark of a child inside her keeps her going. Pain becomes a part of her, she accepts it without complaining. This can be seen when Joe's friends make fun of Heidi. Her reaction to the moment and the events to follow was heart breaking. The ending to the movie deserves mention. Somersault is not a fairy tale. Just the way life isn't. Prince charming and damsel in distress do not end up happily ever after. All said and done, the ending does leave a sense of hope in the viewer's heart and mind.
Drama: Drama in this movie, revolves around the theme of adolescence. For a young girl, turning into a woman is a difficult time. For Heidi its abysmal. Her ideas of sex and love are intertwined. She believes that men are only sexually interested in her. She feels the need to please them in that way. Starting with her mother's boyfriend, the owner of the shop in which she goes looking for a job, Joe and so on. However, it can be argued, more often than not she was taken advantage of. As days go by, experiences pile up on her, and she realizes she's answerable for all her actions. Also, the choice she makes in the end, regarding Joe, proves that she has finally matured and maybe might spend a few more days being a child.
Drawback: The only aspect to the movie that bothered me throughout and after the end was Joe's story. There never was one!! Throughout the movie, the viewer is lead to believe that even though Joe puts on this "bad boy" act he has a warm heart. Maybe there's a reason why he's the way he is. Maybe they'll show it towards the end. The wait continues throughout the movie in vain.
Also, what's with the dad?? His son is in some sort pain, enough to make a grown man grovel like a baby. Isn't the dad concerned?? Or maybe there's a reason to that too. And maybe, MAAAAAAAYBE they should've let us know. Maybe it was the director's way of increasing the weird quotient of the movie. I can only assume it was intended.
Anyways, it was a wonderful movie. A nice watch. I wouldn't mind recommending it to a friend.
With more to come,
Ferluci :) .
